Sports Betting The Introduction

July 15, 2008

Sports Betting IntroductionSports betting started simply enough, with a couple of guys sitting around the table, egging each other on, claiming they know who will win in the upcoming game.  Now in 2008, a sport betting is a big business and has recently been revitalized by online companies.  A sport betting is one avenue of gambling, and has roots in gambling cities like Las Vegas.

Technically speaking, gambling is illegal in the United States except in the states of Nevada, Oregon and Delaware.  This is due to the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1994, and encompasses any operation known as a “betting, gambling or wagering scheme.”  (Other countries also have strict laws governing this practice, and only a few outlaw it outright.)

Nevada is the biggest state for sports gambling, and may be seen by some players as a harmless hobby and by others as a legitimate means of additional income.  In either case, the sports leagues themselves (the NFL, MLB, NHL and etc) are fine with legalized sports betting since it boosts attendance, boosts ratings and thus benefits nearly everyone involved.

Most critics who find fault with gambling are not concerned about the morality of the practice—rather, it’s the ramifications of sports betting.  They may be concerned that the integrity of amateur and professional sports would be compromised when so much money is involved.  In fact, there have been many attempts by sports gamblers to fix matches over the ages just so bookmakers could profit.

However, legitimate bookmakers are legalized and actually fight corruption to the same extent or more than law enforcement does.  Nobody wants the big professional sports leagues to become fixed.  After all, nobody wants the biggest game of the year to be scripted—unless of course, you’re one of the ten people that actually enjoyed the XFL.  Find out how to make real money at sports betting by continuing to visit Sports363.com.
