NFL Football Week 5: Highlights From Sunday’s Games

October 8, 2007

Not the most entertaining week for NFL football, but there were a couple match ups that lived up to the hype and got teams back to form like the Chicago Bears against their undefeated rival Green Bay Packers. In this game Favre was quite impressive despite the 2 interceptions (one of which was a hailmary at the end of the game), throwing for 322 yards and a touchdown, but even with the hall of famer playing like a hall of famer; it wasn’t enough though as the Chicago Bears capitalized on senseless turnovers by the Packers and handed them their first loss of the season.

Another team to get back to their old ways was the San Diego Chargers as the absolutely destroyed division rival Denver Broncos 41-3. LaDainian Tomlinson wasn’t the feature back this time around as Michael Turner tore up the Broncos defense with 147 yards and a touchdown, Antonio Gates was his usual self having 113 yards receiving to lead the team and the touchdown as well. With this win the Chargers looked a lot like last year’s team and now have some momentum going into another AFC West match up next week at home against the hated Oakland Raiders.

Not only was this the week of coming back to form for a few teams, it was also the week of serious injuries for a couple starting quarterbacks with Matt Leinart and Trent Green both going down hard. The worst of the two injuries was Trent Green by far as the aging quarterback suffered a serious concussion after getting clocked in the head by the knee of the Houston Texan’s defense tackle Travis Johnson when Green was making a block. Green is no stranger to concussions, last season’s opener for the Kansas Chiefs is proof of that, he was hit on a scramble which kept him off the field for most of the year. With Green going down the way the way he did and his medical record filled with concussions, it might be possible that the veteran might have played his last game and have to retire from football like Troy Aikman did a few years back. Matt Leinart’s injury on the other hand, wasn’t nearly as hard as the hit that was put on Green, but it was hard enough to break the quarterback’s collarbone and keep him out for a considerable amount of time this season, Kurt Warner will take his place as the starter for the Arizona Cardinals.

Monday Night Football will have the Dallas Cowboys taking on the Buffalo Bills which has the makings of a huge blowout in the Cowboys favor, but like I have said before, you never know.
